Transmission repair and replacement in Winthrop Harbor
Pfeiffer Auto Clinic diagnoses and repairs transmissions at 100 Sheridan Rd in Winthrop Harbor, Illinois, as part of its full-service auto repair. Many shifting problems turn out to be a sensor, wiring, a leak, or low fluid, and those are repaired directly. When a transmission has failed inside, Pfeiffer replaces it, CVTs included, with a remanufactured unit matched to your VIN, which arrives complete and ready to install. The shop also services transmission fluid, clutches, differentials, and drive axles. Call (847) 746-8291.
Diagnosis first
A transmission visit starts with your description of the symptom, then a road test, a computer scan of the engine and transmission control modules, a check of fluid level and condition, and an inspection on the lift for leaks and damaged mounts or wiring. Modern automatics are run by a computer, so a bad sensor signal, low voltage, or a poor ground can make a healthy transmission feel sick. Finding that first can save a replacement nobody needed.
Warning signs
- Slipping, or engine speed rising without the vehicle accelerating
- A delay before the vehicle moves in drive or reverse
- Harsh, late, or erratic shifts
- A shudder at steady speed, often between about 30 and 50 mph
- A burning smell or red fluid under the vehicle
- A check engine or transmission warning light, or limp mode
If you notice one, drive as little as possible and call. Heat is the main cause of transmission failure, and slipping creates heat quickly.

Remanufactured replacement, CVTs included
When the failure is internal, Pfeiffer installs a remanufactured transmission: a complete unit disassembled, cleaned, rebuilt with new wear parts, and tested in a production facility before it ships. It is matched to your VIN, so it fits your model, engine, and drivetrain. The cooler and lines are flushed, the unit is filled with the fluid your manufacturer specifies, and any programming or relearn is completed before a final road test. Continuously variable transmissions (CVTs) are replaced the same way.
Fluid service
Transmission fluid cools, lubricates, and carries the hydraulic pressure that makes an automatic shift. We change or exchange it with the fluid type your manufacturer specifies and follow the severe service schedule for vehicles that tow, haul, or spend their days in stop-and-go traffic. Dark, burnt-smelling fluid or metal in the pan means a diagnosis comes before any fluid service.
Clutches, differentials, and drive axles
On manual transmission vehicles we repair clutches and clutch hydraulics: the disc, pressure plate, release bearing, and the master and slave cylinders. We also service differential gear oil, CV axles, and drive axles. Four-wheel-drive trucks have their own page for transfer case service.

Frequently asked questions
Does Pfeiffer offer remanufactured transmissions?
Yes. After a diagnosis confirms internal failure, Pfeiffer replaces any transmission, including CVTs, with a remanufactured transmission matched to your VIN.
Is it always the transmission when it shifts badly?
No. Sensors, wiring, low fluid, a weak battery, or an engine misfire can all cause shifting problems. That is why we diagnose first.
Do you work on clutches?
Yes. We repair clutches and clutch hydraulics on manual transmission cars and trucks.
How do I book a transmission diagnosis?
Call (847) 746-8291 or use the appointment request form and choose Transmission. We explain what we find before any work begins.
